Adamawa State is in the North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, bordered by Borno State to the northwest, Gombe State to the west, and Taraba State to the southwest while its eastern border forms part of the national border with Cameroon.
Project Description: A sustainable land-use/landscape management project aimed at low-income, underserved communities operating in areas supporting globally-significant biodiversity and natural carbon sink values.
Project term: 30 years
Biome: Savannah Woodland, Montane Grassland, Montane Forest
Project Size:
Target carbon emissions reductions:
Located in a mixed tropical montane forest and grassland setting, Phase 1 of this land-use emissions reduction project is centred on the 6,700 km2 Gashaka-Gumti National Park, Nigeria’s largest statutory protected area, and its economic buffer zone, and is strongly focused on avoided deforestation and reforestation supported by soil regeneration through regenerative farming and fuel-switching from high-carbon to low-carbon energy sources.
Social Impact: Transformation of the the lives of up to 17,500 smallholder farmers, increasing the average income per hectare by $2,000 per year Reduction in energy costs for over 20,000 households and businesses and improved access to clean, low-carbon energy services Subsequent phases will multiply this impact by up to eight times.
Environmental impact: Restoration and enhanced protection of local habitats and biodiversity Adoption of regenerative farming practices Replacement of high-carbon fuels with cleaner low-carbon alternatives
